3 Reasons the Detroit Pistons will make the Playoffs in 2014

Here is a list of 3 reasons the Detroit Pistons will make the Playoffs in 2014.

1. The Roster Overhaul: The addition of Josh Smith and Brendan Jennings will undoubtedly help this franchise get over the “hump”. These guys are all-stars and would make a fair contribution to any line-up, but the Pistons needed it most!

2. Maurice Cheeks: Their head coach was an excellent pro point guard back in the day. He will coach the Pistons to the playoffs because the roster overhaul. A lot of the old players on the Pistons really didn’t have time to fall in love with their old coach Lawrence Frank, so Maurice Cheeks should be able to take the reins and steer them to the playoffs.

3. The Fans: Its all about the fans. The Pistons finished third in average attendance last year, with 14,782 average fans per game. That’s pretty bad. But, with this roster overhaul this year, I think the Pistons fans should be rejuvenated and ready to come out and show their support. Kind of like in the 2004 season when we ranked #1 in attendance.

That is all…

2 Things That Point to Miggy Winning The Triple Crown… Again!

Crown

by autumnyadig

We all know by now that Miguel Cabrera won the Triple Crown last year and impressive feat, non the less. But, can he do it again? The answer, Yes and here is why.

Reason #1: Chris Davis

At the All-star break Chris Davis was batting .315, with 93 RBIs, and 37 HRs. Numbers that only Miggy could come par too. But, that first half dominance has come to a little bump in the road. Right in his last 6 games he is batting .136 (3 for his last 22 AB), with 0 RBIs, and 0 HRs. Now do you think the door is opening for Miggy to take the crown?

Reason #2: Miggy is “Miggy”

At the All-star Break Miguel Cabrera was batting .366, with 94 RBIs, and 30 HRs. His last 6 game numbers are as follows: batting .250 (4 for his last 16), with 4 RBIs, and 2 HRS. Okay so the numbers aren’t THAT different, but they’re different.

3 Things That Make Miguel Cabrera Better Than Anyone Else.

In honor of Miguel Cabrera having another amazing first half of baseball and making the 2013 all-star team. Here is 3 things that make “Miggy” better than anyone else.

1. Pitch To Him, If You Dare: Miguel Cabrera’s batting average as of today is .365 (the highest in the American League) and he is batting a whopping .443 with runners in scoring position. Even more impressive is his .458 on-base percentage, which is the highest in the league. Billy Bean would be proud!

2. Torii Hunter, Prince Fielder: If Miguel Cabrera was not dangerous enough, these guys add to the fire. They help make him an extraordinary player. Torii Hunter is batting a solid .315 this year along with an on-base percentage of .352. Torii is doing a great job setting the table for “Miggy” to clean. If there was, lets say a Brandon Inge type player hitting behind Cabrera he wouldn’t be half the man he is today. The “Prince” provides him with the perfect complement of average, and power. Prince career averages for home run’s in a season is 36.

3. Reigning MVP, Triple Crown Winner: Miguel Cabrera won his first regular season MVP award last year. He even managed to top that accolade the same year, by wining the first Triple Crown in over 45 years! This man can do it again this year. As he leads in batting average, RBIs, and is second in home runs.

This makes for a very exciting second half! Go Tigers.

Detroit Pistons – Draft Grades

The 2013 NBA Draft was conducted on Thursday, June 27. A lot of sports reporters had Nerlens Noel going number 1 overall, but the shocking Anthony Bennett pick fueled what was to be an interesting draft. Below I will grade the Pistons number 8th, 37th, and 56th pick:

Pick #8 Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (SG); Georgia: (A-)

Physical: 6’5”; 205 lbs; 20 years old

Season/Career: Played 2 seasons for the Georgia Bulldogs. In his sophomore year he averaged: 18.5 points per game, 7.1 rebounds per game, and 33.9 minutes per game. He had a total of 7 double-doubles. The most points he scored in a game was 32 points (vs LSU). A whooping 75 percent of his shots were jump shots on the perimeter.

Accolades: All-SEC first team (2013), SEC Player of the year (2013), AP honorable mention All-American (2013).

Pick #37 Tony Mitchell (PF); North Texas:  (B-)

Physical: 6’8”; 235 lbs; 21 years old; 7’3” wingspan

Season/Career: Sat out his freshman season at North Texas due to academic failure. Most of his game averages dropped from his red-shirt freshman season, despite seeing an increase in playing time. (2012): 14.7 points per game, 10.3 rebounds per game, and 29.4 minutes played per game. (2013): 13.0 points per game, 8.5 rebounds per game, and 32.4 minutes played per game.

Accolades: Second team All-Conference (2013), First team All-Conference (2012), and Sun Belt Conference freshman of the year (2012).

Pick #56 Peyton Siva, (PG); Louisville: (B+)

Physical: 6’1”; 181 lbs, 22 years old

Season/Career: Played a total of 4 seasons with the Lousiville Cardinals. His senior year he averaged 10.0 points per game, 2.4 rebounds per game, 5.7 assists, in 31.2 minutes per game played. Lead the charge for the nations most effective turnover rich defense (he had 2.8 steals per 40 minutes played).

Accolades: Third team All-Big East (2013), Second team Academic All-American (2013), Two time Big East tournament MVP (2012, 2013), and NCAA Champion (2013).

Overall: (B+)

Inside: Maurice Cheeks

Earlier this month the Pistons search for a head coach ended with the hiring of former point guard, Maurice Cheeks. The hype around this search began when Pistons owner Tom Gores said that he would have Phil Jackson “advise” him in the search for a new head coach. Advise? That was the first red flag. Just this past year Phil Jackson was trying to make a comeback with the Los Angeles Lakers, now he’s trying to advise the Pistons. I translate this as “I would never want to coach in Detroit, but I’ll help you find someone who might”. That is a huge slap in the face to an organization who needs stability. So who is Maurice Cheeks?

Maurice Cheeks is on right. (photo credits: Keith Alison)

Maurice Cheeks: As a player, Maurice played for the 76ers, Spurs, Knicks, Hawks, and the Nets. He won his sole NBA Championship with the 76ers in 1983 and was a 4 time NBA All-star (1983, 1986-1988), as well as a 4 time NBA All-Defensive First Team (1983-1986). His number 10 is retired by the 76ers. For full stats visit this page.

As a coach, Maurice started as an assistant with the 76ers from 1994-2001. He got his first coaching gig with the Trail Blazers in 2001 and held the job for 4 years. After getting sacked their, he coached the 76ers from 2005-2008. 50 wins was the most his teams ever one in a single season as a coach.

Maurice Cheeks has his job cut out for him, as expectations are high and urgency is a must. We all have to play the waiting game together, as the NBA season doesn’t start until October.

MLB Debut – Jose Alverez

Those of you who watched the Tigers play on Sunday, June 9th were probably wondering, who is this Jose Alverez guy? Well here’s the scoop:

According to MLB.com; Jose Alverez is a 24 year old, 5’11″, 180 LBS lefty from Barcelona, Venezuela. He has played the two previous years in AA ball with the Florida Marlins organization. Having an ERA just north of 5.00 in 2011, and just north of 4.00 in 2012. This year (2013) Alverez started in 12 games with the Toledo Mudhens, the Detroit Tigers AAA affiliate. His ERA was under 3.00 and he racked up 76 strikeouts in just 74.1 innings pitched! With those numbers what made the call up so surprising? Well, The tigers already have a great starting pitching staff this year, with 3 of their starters in the top 10 for strikeouts. What the Tigers need is help in the ladder end of the bullpen. The continuing struggles of José Valverde, Joaquín Benoit, and Phil Coke are only part of the problem. Jose Alverez’s showcase start on Sunday was excellent, heres the pitching box score for Sundays game:

His 7 strikeouts in 6 innings pitched was right on par with his 1.03 strikeout per innings average in the minors. Keep a close eye on this kid when the tigers look to make some roster moves later in the season.

3 Things That Will Bring The Lions Success 2013…

Photo taken by Bill Striffler.

The Detroit Lions finished a lousy 4-12 (good for 4th in the NFC North) for the 2012 season and are looking to rebound. Here are the three key things the lions will need in order to be successful in the 2013 season:

1. Rushing the Football: According to ESPN, the Lions were ranked 23rd in rushing yards per game last year. In fact, they only averaged 100.8 rushing yards per game. With the explosive passing attack that the Lions are able to put up (2nd best in the league in terms of passing yards per game), a suitable run game will help the Lions soar. I’m not completely sold on the rushing ability of Reggie Bush, but in order to succeed the Lions must pound the football in order to create better passing lanes for Matthew Stafford.

2. Tighten up the “D”: Gunther Cunningham is entering his 4th season with the Detroit Lions. He has a storied career, but I believe its make it or break it for him this year. Last year he and the Lions were 14th in opponent passing yards per game, and 16th in opponent rushing yards per game. In order to win the division, the Lions must tighten up their defense in both the passing and rushing areas. With the addition of Glover Quin, the Lions are heading into the right direction for the 2013 season.

3. Stay Healthy: I know its hard to say that the Lions must be healthy in order to compete in the 2013 season, but its true. Many of the Lions players have sustained injuries throughout their careers in the NFL and they must stay healthy for the Lions to succeed. Nick Fairly, Luis Delmas, Mikel Leshoure, Chris Houston, Branden Pettigrew, etc, all were big contributors and sustained injuries in 2013. The addition of Reggie Bush is just another caution sign as he has been injury prone throughout his career.

What do you think are the 3 things to the Lions success in 2013???
